Was Noah's Flood Regular or Extra Large?
(Plus Make a Rainbow Outside)

Some people have argued that Noah's Flood was not a global flood but a big flood
in a little area.  These people deny the flood covered the entire earth, but suggest
instead that God flooded one geographical area.  Is this true?  What does the Bible
say about the flood?  Is there evidence in nature of a global flood?

The first place we should start is God's Word: The Bible.  God has promised to
keep His Word preserved for us (
Isaiah 40:8), and archeology continues to prove
the Bible is the most reliable historical document we have.

Genesis 7:19-20 states:
"They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire
heavens were covered.  The waters rose and covered the mountains to a
depth of more than fifteen cubits." (NIV)

15 cubits above the mountains...how high is that?  That means the water covered
the highest mountain by approximately 20 feet!  How could water only cover one
geographical area yet rise 20 feet above the mountains?

How tall is the highest mountain?

Mount Everest at 29,035!

God also made a special promise that he would never flood the entire earth again:

"Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again
will there be a flood to destroy the earth."  Genesis 9:11

You have probably seen floods in your area of the world, but if the flood described in
Genesis was just one geographical area...then God has broken His promise every
time there is a flood in your town.

Trivia:
Do you remember the sign that God gave us to show He would never
destroy the earth with a flood again?

  • Hair Bow

  • Elephant Bone

  • Rainbow

  • Paintball

Now go see if you are right in Genesis 9:12-16

There is much evidence all around us indicating a global flood: sea shells
have been found on top of Mount Everest, soft body animals have been
found fossilized (How in the world do you fossilize jellyfish??? Quickly!),
and many other fossils show creatures fossilized unexpectedly (caught in
the middle of eating and birthing).

Stay tuned as ScienceSplat continues to explore evidences of the Global
Flood.

Want to make a rainbow outside?

Supplies: Garden hose, sunshine, water, and water sprayer.

Instructions:  Head outside on a sunny day and unwind your water
hose.  Stand with your back to the sun (the sun should be behind you)
and spray the water.  You should see a beautiful rainbow.

Explanation:  White light is made up of all colors.  Water droplets reflect
and refract the light waves.  The white light is separated into the
different colors depending on the amount of refraction (which is based
partially on the wavelength.)

The Bible says that God will remember his covenant not to flood the
entire earth ever again when he sees the rainbow!  (Genesis 9:14-16)

God saved Noah and his family from the flood and Noah's ark is a picture of Jesus
saving us.  He loves you and wants you to have an abundant life.
